Källskär

Källskär is a small Finnish island and well-known attraction south of Kökar in Åland .

Due to its location on the southern edge of the Åland archipelago, it is exposed to harsh weather conditions and accordingly barren. The Ice Age left impressive traces on Källskär, for example the “Kannan”, a rock formation formed by large boulders that, according to today's knowledge, rolled and dug into the rock in the meltwater of the glacier.

In 1965 Göran Åkerhjelm had a log house built on Källskär, which was designed by the architect Reima Pietilä . The complex around the log cabin also included a small garden, a boat harbor and a kind of small garden shed on a neighboring rock. The garden shed is also called the Muumihaus because Tove Jansson spent some time there.

The most famous non-geological attraction on Källskär, which also dominates the postcard offers on Kökar, is a replica of the statue of Mercury by Giovanni Bologna . The messenger of the gods stands on the face of the wind god Zephyr .
