Ulla-Lena Lundberg (born July 14, 1947 in Kökar , Åland ) is a Finnish-Swedish writer.

Life

Ulla-Lena Lundberg grew up as the child of a pastor's family on Kökar. Lundberg began to write as a teenager and published her experiences of stays as an exchange student in the USA and as a student in Japan . In 1976 Lundberg published a volume with information from the residents of her island of origin she interviewed. The island of Kökar is also the setting for her novels Kungens Anna and Ingens Anna . Lundberg lived for two years in the African states of Botswana , Zambia , Kenya and Tanzania , which was the source of several non-fiction books and novels. She condensed a four-month stay in Siberia in 1993 into an autobiographical travel report.

In 1985 she finished her studies at the Åbo Akademi with the diploma thesis Franciskus i Kökar on the settlement of Kökar. In 1986/87 she was invited to the University of Minnesota as a lecturer and writer in residence .

Lundberg was awarded the Runeberg Prize in 1998 for Regn and the Finlandia Prize in 2012 for Is , for which she had been nominated three times, in 1987 with Sand , 1989 with Leo and 2001 with Marsipan soldiers . In 1990 she was awarded the Thank You-for-the-Book medal for Leo . The Åbo Akademi awarded her an honorary doctorate in 1993.

The novel Is was the literary model for the opera Jää, which premiered in January 2019 .
