Joseph Krautwald (born March 7, 1914 in Borkendorf , Neisse district , province of Silesia ; † January 13, 2003 in Rheine , Westphalia ) was a German sculptor .

Career

At the age of 14, Joseph Krautwald began an apprenticeship as a stonemason at the Thust company in Groß Kunzendorf , which he was able to convert into a sculptor's apprenticeship a year later due to his early artistic talent . After graduation and a short period as a journeyman, Krautwald attended the wood carving school in Bad Warmbrunn with Cirillo Dell'Antonio and the sculpting class of Josef Thorak at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. He finally completed his training in 1939 with Karl Albiker in Dresden. A turbulent war and post-war period followed, which took Joseph Krautwald to Rheine in the Münsterland in 1949 , where he settled and set up his studio in 1951 . Joseph Krautwald died very old and received many awards on January 13, 2003 in Rheine.

Works

In his extraordinarily extensive oeuvre, sacred art takes up the greatest part ; He alone made over 300 depictions of the Way of the Cross . He designed churches, chapels and tombstones all over Germany, especially in the diocese of Münster and in north-west Germany. His small bronzes were widely used as communion, confirmation and wedding gifts.
