Långnäs is a place in Lumparland in Åland , 30 km east of Mariehamn . From here ferries run to Kumlinge and Galtby via Kökar .

The ferry terminal in Långnäs

In the early 1960s, the Silja Line shipping company was able to buy land and in 1965 built a ferry terminal based on a design by architect Bengt Lundsten. Due to its architecture, the terminal building received national and international mention. Traffic via Långnäs as an alternative to Mariehamn started shortly afterwards, but only lasted until 1975 when the terminal was closed again and finally demolished in 1993.

When duty-free sales within the European Union ended in 1999, a new terminal was built so that the large car passenger ferries from Sweden and Finland could dock in Långnäs. This enabled the duty-free sale of goods on board the ferries to continue, as the largely autonomous Åland Islands are subject to special rules.

The port is called by ferries on the route between Stockholm and Turku at night.
