Grisslehamn is a place ( Tatort ) at the northern end of the island of Väddö in the Swedish municipality of Norrtälje , Stockholm County . The place is on the Baltic coast on the "Åland Sea".

From Grisslehamn, ferries run by the shipping company Eckerö to Eckerö in Åland . From Åland there are other ferry connections to Finland and Estonia.

history

The original Grisslehamn, which today bears the name Gamla Grisslehamn ('Old Grisslehamn'), is located just a few kilometers south of today's city. The place is mentioned for the first time in historical treatises on the postal connection between Finland and Åland in 1376.

middle Ages

In addition to fishing, securing the postal route was the most important task in Grisslehamn for a long time. This was particularly important for the Swedish kings, as important royal edicts were distributed in this way .

The organization of the old postal route was strengthened in 1638 on the initiative of Chancellor Axel Oxenstierna . For this purpose, a so-called post office was set up every two to three miles . The residents of these homesteads were responsible for transporting the mail to the nearest homestead. The work was strenuous and sometimes dangerous, especially in winter. Fatal accidents occurred particularly during transport by sea.

18th century

Grisslehamn's post

When a fire destroyed Grisslehamn in 1754, the Swedish king decided to move Grisslehamn to its current location a few kilometers north of the old position. The main reason for the relocation was the shorter distance by sea to Eckerö on Åland, so that the transport of the post was made easier. 1756 is the founding year of today's Grisslehamn. A new post office and barracks (closed in 1869) were built. The post office designed by Carl Fredrik Adelcrantz is the oldest post office building in Sweden.

19th century

Memorial in honor of soldiers who fell in 1809

During the war against Russia 1808-1809, Grisslehamn came back into focus. The commandant of Åland, Baron Georg Carl von Döbeln , fled across the frozen sea to Grisslehamn when the Russians under General Kulnew took the island. Kulnew pursued from Döbeln over the ice to Grisslehamn, but before it reached the village, von Döbeln withdrew to Älmsta . Only a small unit led by a young ensign remained. Kulnew threatened to burn Grisslehamn if the unit did not retreat a few kilometers. After a brief period of reflection, the ensign withdrew with his unit, although he risked a court-martial. Kulnew did not stay long, but withdrew a little later. Grisslehamn was saved.

In memory of the fallen soldiers who defended Grisslehamn on March 19, 1809, a statue was placed in the harbor in the form of a hat, inspired by the uniform hats of the Uppland regiment .

20th century

At the beginning of the 20th century, the rowing boats used to carry mail were replaced by steamers. But the post rowing has remained in an annual race to this day. Tourism thus took on a stronger role. The Hotel Havsbaden opened in 1903 and in 1907 it had 1,300 summer guests.

Today, besides tourism, the ferry connection between Grisslehamn and Eckerö on Åland (Eckerölinjen) is the most important source of income.

Culture

Engström's studio

Grisslehamn also played an important role in culture. The most famous artist who lived in Grisslehamn was the author, artist and caricaturist Albert Engström (1869–1940). He acquired the Augustberg property in 1900 and built a house there that now serves as a museum. Only a few minutes from the house is the artist's former studio right on the cliffs. The lake side is painted white instead of red as it serves as a navigation mark. Many contemporary artists came and went during his lifetime, including Carl Larsson , Anders Zorn , August Strindberg and Bruno Liljefors . Also Evert Taube was invited.

Other more or less well-known artists were also active in Grisslehamn, such as the wood artist Karl Johan Andersson , who was a close friend of Engström, and singer Cacka Israelsson . The actor Krister Henriksson also comes from Grisslehamn .
