Posten Norge AS is a Norwegian state company responsible for the postal service in Norway .

history

The origins of today's company go back to 1647. The Danish governor Hannibal Sehested founded the Royal Norwegian Post Office on January 17, 1647 (Norwegian: Det kongelige norske Postverket ). This was initially run privately and under royal privilege until 1719, before the state took over responsibility. As a result, the post office was behind various ministries. With the acquisition of two ships in 1827, mail allocation was partially shifted to the sea and, above all, deliveries along the coast and abroad were improved. The Post also participated in the construction of Norway's first railway line and from the mid-19th century also used trains for mail delivery. The world's first franking machine was put into use in Norway in 1903 , and mail was also transported by air from 1920. In 1926 an authority was established which was named Postverket in 1933 .

In 1993, the Postverket was transformed into an administration company, and in 1996 it became a stock corporation with limited responsibility. The transformation into a purely state-owned company took place in 2002 by resolution of the Storting National Parliament . From this time on, Posten Norge bought various companies, including the Swedish Citymail , which was sold again in 2018.

The government Solberg , in April 2015 a draft law, which was to stop the postal deliveries on Saturdays. The reason given by the then Transport Minister Ketil Solvik-Olsen was that around 75 percent less mail was distributed on Saturdays than on the remaining days. The law finally came into force in spring 2016. As of January 1, 2016, the legally guaranteed monopoly position for the postal sector ceased to exist, as required in a directive of the European Union from 2008.
