Poșta Română (temporarily Romînă ) [ ˈpoʃta roˈmɨnə ] is the name of the Romanian post office.

history

The messenger mail has been known in Romania since the Middle Ages, the first written mention is in 1399, when all cities and villages were obliged to provide the necessary horses and carts. In the second half of the 18th century the post office in Romania was nationalized and the first post stations and horse stables were built. From 1848 onwards, the post office was run by private individuals for three years, as a result of which there were 30 postal routes with the center in Craiova in 1850 . From 1852 private individuals could also use the mail delivery service, shortly afterwards the state monopoly was introduced. From July 22, 1858 were in Moldovafirst hand-printed stamps issued, which are among the oldest in the world. It concerns the famous " Ox head " stamp series , also called "Aurochs head", in Romanian "Cap de Bour". Some examples are priceless in the world of philatelists today.

When Moldova merged with Wallachia to form a common state in 1862 , the two postal services were also merged. By 1900 the telegraph and telephone companies were added to the postal administration, from which the name PTT resulted. In the course of the 19th century, most of the services we know today from the post office, such as mailboxes, timetables and the like, came into being. The Romanian Post was also one of the founding members of the Universal Postal Union . In 1925 the PTT became the PTTR, as the office also took control of the radio. From 1991 the postal sector was separated from the telecommunications sectors and run as an autonomous society.
