history

Imprint from June 1913 on a 25 piastre Turkish postage stamp

When Albania was still part of the Ottoman Empire , there were branches of the Austro-Hungarian Post and the Italian Post in addition to the Turkish Post . Just a week after Albania's independence was proclaimed, in early December 1912 a minister of post, telegraph and telephone was appointed. The Albanian Post took over the former post offices of the Ottoman administration. In May 1913 the Ministry issued the first postage stamps . The second postage stamp, which was issued from June 1913 and was initially stamped on envelopes, comes from the post offices of the Provisional Government ( Albanian  Postat e Qeverriës së Përkohëshme ). During the chaos of World War I , there was no nationwide postal system; various cities and regions tried independently to somehow maintain the postal service. In 1922 real postage stamps came into circulation for the first time. They were labeled Posta Shyptare . The Albanian Post has been a member of the Universal Postal Union since 1922 . In a country where the majority of the population were illiterate , there were only 28 post offices in the 1930s.

After the Second World War , the postal system was slowly expanded. The number of letters and parcels transported rose from 7,342,000 in 1950 to 22,624,000 in 1970, but fell to 14,228,000 in 1988. A lack of confidence in the reliability of the Post resulted in almost a third of all items being sent by registered mail at the end of the 1980s . Because of the poorly developed telephone network, around four million telegrams were sent every year. In communist Albania, mail was heavily controlled and censored.

With the collapse of the totalitarian regime in 1991, a difficult phase of transformation began for the Albanian Post, during which only limited services could be provided and many customers lost their trust in the Post. In 1991, the run-down postal service only transported 9.7 million letters and 82,000 parcels and 40.5 million newspapers. In 1992 the telecommunications services were spun off into an independent company called Albanian Telecom and the postal services geared towards the market economy.

From 2005 Posta Shqiptare was reorganized and technically equipped with modern aids. The extensive investments led to a significant increase in sales as well as the number of employees and a small expansion of the branch network. Postcodes were also set for the first time in 2006 .
