history

The first post office of the Ottoman Empire was opened on October 23, 1840 so that the sultans could respond to news from abroad. The post office was located in the courtyard of the new mosque in Istanbul and was named Postahane -i- Amir . The first officer Suleiman Aga took over the service at this post office because as a seafaring officer he spoke several languages and was able to translate the messages. A few years after the invention of telegraphy , this service was also introduced in Turkey and a separate telegraph department was established in 1855.

In 1871, the Telegraph Department merged with the Post Office to form the Ministry of Post and Telegraph. A mail transport network began to be created in 1876 and in 1901 it was expanded to include parcel and money transport. On May 23, 1909, the first manual switchboard was opened in Istanbul. In 1913 the authority was given the name Post, Telegraph and Telephone Directorate . In the early years of the Republic of Turkey and up to 1984 the services were expanded.

On April 24, 1995, today's Turkish Post began to work as an independent company. On January 29, 2000, it was announced in Official Gazette No. 23948 that the name of the organization was "TC General Directorate of the Postal and Telegraph Organization".

According to the PTT in 2011, 993 million domestic and 15 million international mail were delivered and 1.547 million telegrams were accepted. The turnover was TL 1788 billion.
