Viscofan is the world's largest manufacturer of artificial casings based in Cáseda , Spain. It produces collagen and plastic casings as well as peeled casings.
history
Viscofan was founded in 1975, the year in which the production and marketing of its products began. As the company grew, the company's management decided to list the company on the Madrid Stock Exchange in December 1986 .
As part of its growth strategy, Viscofan acquired the IAN (Industrias Alimentarias de Navarra) food group in 1988, which enabled the industry to gain momentum on a national level.
The company then developed an international expansion strategy, which began in 1990 with the acquisition of the German company Naturin GmbH & Co KG and the opening of new branches in other countries, for example in 1994 with the opening of sales offices in Russia and Asia and the start of activities in the USA .
In 1995 Gamex in the Czech Republic and Trificiel in São Paulo ( Brazil ) were acquired. The expansion continued and in 2005 it acquired Koteksprodukt AD in Serbia and parts of AB Tripasin in Sweden . In 2006 Viscofan increased its presence in the American market by purchasing Teepak's American assets (USA and Mexico).
In 2008, the company expanded its combined heat and power plant in Spain . In the same year, Viscofan Bioengineering (VBE) was established as a business unit that combines life sciences and engineering to deliver collagen-based products that can be used to repair damaged tissue in patients. The Viscofan Group's bioengineering unit is located in Weinheim , a reference center for the company's collagen casings. There it has an additional clean room for the production of collagen products for medical use.
In 2009, with the establishment of Viscofan Technology Co. Ltd. reached a new milestone in the company's international expansion strategy in the Chinese city of Suzhou . Viscofan had previously sold its products in this Asian country, but did not have its own production center. A year later, in 2010, the country's first converting plant was inaugurated.
Viscofan Uruguay SA was founded in 2012 . This facility produced collagen for the first time in Latin America .
In 2013 a plant for the production of collagen in China was opened on the Asian market. A year later, in 2014, the company opened an extrusion plant in Uruguay.
In 2015 Viscofan sold the IAN Group in order to concentrate fully on the carcass business with the acquisition of Nanopack Technology & Packaging in order to give the plastics division new impetus. The company also inaugurated its new plastics plant in Mexico in 2015 .
In 2016, Viscofan strengthened its international position with the acquisition of Vector USA and Vector Europe.
Production lines
Viscofan produces all four types of artificial casings produced on the world market:
- Cellulose casings:
This variety is made from natural cellulose . It is mainly used to make traditionally cooked sausages. In most cases, the case serves only as a cooking pan and is generally stripped by the manufacturer prior to sale to end users. Viscofan holds around 50% of the world market share in this product.
- Collagen shells:
These casings use collagen, a protein extracted from cattle and pig hides, as their raw material . This is an alternative to natural casings for the production of fresh and processed sausages. Collagen offers great durability as it can be used for quick filling, hanging and oven cooking. Viscofan holds around a third of the global market share of this variety.
- Fibrous casings:
These consist of a mixture of cellulose and Manila hemp , a vegetable paper that gives the casing a high level of strength and a uniform shape. They are mainly used for large-sized and sliced meat such as mortadella or pepperoni. Viscofan is one of the 3 leading manufacturers of this technology worldwide.
- Plastic housing:
This type of casing is made of various plastic polymers that are mainly used for cooked products such as ham, mortadella and cheese. Viscofan also produces plastic products for packaging, such as shrink bags for fresh or frozen meat and plastic films to separate cut food.
