Meliá Hotels International, SA (formerly Sol Meliá Hotels & Resorts SA , its own spelling also MELIÃ ) is a Spanish hotel chain that was founded in 1956 by Gabriel Escarrer Juliá in Palma , Spain . In 2007, the company was the world's largest resort operator with more than three hundred hotels in thirty countries and more than 35,000 employees. In 2008, Meliá was the market leader in the hotels and resorts categories in Spain.

history

The company's roots go back to 1956, when the then 21-year-old Gabriel Escarrer Juliá rented the Altair Hotel in Palma de Mallorca. In the following years Escarrer took advantage of the island's increasing popularity as a tourist destination and from time to time integrated more and more hotels into his company Hoteles Mallorquines. In the 1960s and 1970s, the hotel chain also expanded geographically by both hotels on the Canary Islands as the rest of the Balearic Islands acquired were. After the end of General Franco's reign, tourism in Spain developed faster than ever before and Hoteles Mallorquines was able to expand into the Spanish inland with great dynamism. In this way, a nationwide presence in Spain was achieved in the early 1980s.

In 1984 the hotel chain was renamed Hoteles Sol. Only a short time later, the company was able to establish itself as the largest hotel chain in Spain after successfully acquiring the Hotasa Group. This was represented at a total of 32 locations. Another merger took place three years later with the Meliá hotel chain, from which the current Sol Meliá chain emerged. The merger increased the global presence of the hotel chain enormously, as it was now also represented in the Caribbean , the so-called Americas and other parts of Europe.

In recent times Sol Meliá Hotels & Resorts SA has made increasing attempts to enter into partnerships with other companies in the tourism industry. Although Sol Meliá's stock has been listed on the Madrid Stock Exchange since 1996 , the Escarrer family still held a stake of over 61 percent in 2007.

The Sol Meliá Hotels & Resorts SA has partnerships with numerous airlines, u. a. with Lufthansa , American Airlines , Delta Airlines , Iberia and Spanair and since October 2011 with KLM / Air France .
