life and work

Àngel Rodamilans began his musical education at the age of six with M. Ferrer at the Escolania de la Puríssima Concepció de Sabadell . In 1883 he joined the Escola de Montserrat . Here he studied with Fathers Millán Agostino and Manuel Guzmán . From 1890 to 1899 Rodamilans worked as an organist in the Benedictine monastery El Pueyo in Barbastre (province of Huesca) and at the same time went through his theological training there. He completed the last two years of his training at the diocesan seminary in Barcelona. Here he studied piano with Enric Granados at the same time . In 1901 Rodamilans was ordained a priest in the Palau Episcopal in Barcelona.

At the end of his training he worked as music master in the parish of La Puríssima Concepció in Sabadell. From 1915 he worked as a music master in the parish of Sant Esperit of Terrassa . He founded a choral schola here. In Terrassa he worked from 1919 to 1921 in founding Cor Montserrat . During this time he also played double bass , tiblist and tenor in the Cobla Catalonia in the neighboring town of Granollers .

In 1923 he entered the Montserrat monastery as a monk. He was appointed prefect of the Escola and held this office from 1926 to 1929. He also worked as a piano teacher in Montserrat. In 1929 he gave up the office of head of education or prefect and put more emphasis on his compositional activity. From 1933 to 1936 he directed the monk choir and the Choralschola Escolania de Montserrat as Kapellmeister .

As a composer, Rodamilans created around one hundred musical works. Religious choral works were clearly in the foreground. Among his early works, the Dos versos para Vísperas (Two stanzas for Vespers) for organ from 1893 must be emphasized. In his maturity phase he created smaller works such as the songs El gira-sol (The Sunflower), Rosa vera (True Rose), Entre lliris (Between Lilies) or El vostre nom (Your Name). In his final years he created large, complex choral masses such as the Magnificat for soloists, choir and organ (1935) and the Laudibus cives. Himne al gloriós P. Sant Benet (Hymn for the glorious Father Sant Benet) for double choir and organ (1935).

In the beginning of the Spanish Civil War, Àngel Rodamilans was captured and shot by a group of militiamen in his hometown of Sabadell, where he had sought refuge, on July 27, 1936 - recognized as a Catholic clergyman.
