Joan Baptista Guzmán i Martínez , OSB , real name Manuel Guzmán i Martínez , (born January 19, 1846 in Aldaia ( Valencia ), † March 18, 1909 in Montserrat Monastery ) was a Valencian organist , composer , music teacher and monk of the Montserrat monastery .

life and work

Guzmán completed his organist training in Torrent . There he was a student of J. Piqueras and JM Úbeda.

From 1872 he was first second organist in Salamanca and from 1872 to 1875 first organist in Covadonga . In 1875 he was Kapellmeister of the Cathedral of Avila , 1876 of the Cathedral of Valladolid and from 1877 to 1888 of the Cathedral of Valencia .

In 1888 Guzmán entered the Montserrat Monastery as a monk. In 1889 he was appointed head of the Escolania de Montserrat there. He fundamentally reformed the Choralschola and the Escola de Montserrat and thus created the basis for today's musical training institute.

He expanded the choir's repertoire to include polyphonists of the 16th century and the works of classical and contemporary composers. He transcribed works by Joan Baptista Comes or reconstructed his works. He created around 130 sacred compositions of varying value, including twelve masses , nine misereres , several motets and eight lamentationes . These works are all committed to the romantic tradition of the time.

Guzmán's students included Àngel Rodamilans , Anselm Ferrer and David Pujol .
