Juan Manuel Cañizares

Juan Manuel Cañizares (* 1966 in Sabadell , Catalonia , Spain ) is a Spanish guitar virtuoso and composer and currently one of the most famous flamenco guitar soloists .

His father and older brother Rafael gave him his first guitar lessons. In 1976 he was accepted at the Conservatorio Municipal de Sabadell . He continued his education in Terrassa and Barcelona . In 1982 Cañizares won the Premio Nacional de Guitarra in Jerez . That was the cornerstone of his career. He soon gave concerts with numerous well-known artists such as Enrique Morente , Camarón de la Isla , María Pagés , Pepe de Lucía , Joan Manuel Serrat , Alejandro Sanz , Rocío Jurado , Peter Gabriel , Al di Meola , La Fura dels Baus and The Chieftains . An important stage in his musical career was the collaboration with Paco de Lucía from 1988 to 1998. During this time he performed with Lucia and his ensemble in many cities in Europe, Asia, America and Africa.

He has also made a name for himself as a composer. Cañizares has rewritten some of Isaac Albéniz's piano works for two guitars. In the meantime he also appears in duets with classical guitarists, such as B. 2005 with José Maria Gallardo at Carnegie Hall . Also in 2005 one of his concerts was part of the program of the Spanish Pavilion at the Expo 2005 in Japan . On May 1, 2011 Cañizares performed at the European Concert with the Berliner Philharmoniker at the Teatro Real in Madrid under the conductor Sir Simon Rattle . Joaquín Rodrigo's Concierto de Aranjuez came for the performance . Cañizares is the first guitarist and after Plácido Domingo the second Spanish musician to be invited.

He has also been teaching at the Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya in Barcelona since 2003 . So far he has released five albums with his interpretations and received the Spanish Academy Award for best interpreter of classical music for his fourth album, Suite Iberia, Albéniz by Cañizares .
