The Henri Delaunay Cup ( French Coupe Henri Delaunay ) is the trophy for the European Football Championship , which has been awarded since 1960.

The silver-plated European Championship trophy was designed by Arthur Bertrand in Paris in 1960 . It weighs about ten kilograms and is 42.5 centimeters high. It was named after the French Henri Delaunay , UEFA's first general secretary and “spiritual father” of the European Football Championship.

As a challenge cup, the EM trophy remains the permanent property of UEFA. Should a team become European champions three times in a row or five times in total, the relevant association will receive a true-to-original replica of the trophy from the European Football Association.

Otherwise, copies made on the initiative of victorious football associations may not be more than four fifths of the original size and must be clearly labeled “replica”.

A new cup has been awarded since the European Championship in 2008 , replacing the previous Henri Delaunay Cup. The new cup is essentially similar to its predecessor, but it is larger and no longer has a marble base, as it was found to be too heavy. Instead, the silver base has been enlarged by 18 centimeters. The old cup was replaced, on the one hand to express the enlargement of the tournament and on the other hand because it was the smallest cup of the European tournaments. The new cup was presented on January 27, 2006 and, like its predecessor, was named after Henri Delaunay. It was designed by the Asprey jewelry company .

The old trophy is on display in a UEFA showcase in Nyon .

value

The original from 1960 was silver-plated and sold to UEFA for 20,000 French francs . The new Henri Delaunay Cup is made of sterling silver . For the production of the new trophy, the jewelery company Asprey charged UEFA 15,400 euros, the pure material value of the silver at that time was around 3,000 US dollars .
