Henri Delaunay (born June 15, 1883 - November 9, 1955 ) was a French footballer and general secretary of UEFA . The Henri Delaunay Cup , the trophy for the respective winner of the European Football Championship , was named after him.

In his active time as a footballer, Delaunay ran for the Paris club Étoile des Deux Lacs and then began a career as a referee .

As early as 1927 he had the idea of a European championship for national teams , but this was rejected by FIFA . At that time he was already the general secretary of the French association. From 1954 until his death, Delaunay was UEFA General Secretary .

It was not until 1957, after his death, that the plans for a European championship took shape, which was then held for the first time from 1958 to 1960 . His son Pierre Delaunay , who was his successor as UEFA General Secretary from 1956 to 1959, had successfully continued to work on this project after his father's death.
