Technical area with bench and boundary lines

The technical zone (also called the coaching zone ) is a demarcated space outside the field of play during soccer matches , in which coaches , supervisors and substitute players can stay. The rectangular area, which is usually marked with boundary lines, extends from the substitutes' bench up to one meter from the sideline. On each side of the substitute bench it extends one meter beyond the width of the substitute bench, which can also consist of a row of individual seats. It is described in Rule 3, Decision 2 of the International Football Association Board .

The regulations of the respective competition determine how many people are allowed to stay in the technical zone. These people must be identified before the game begins. At any time, can one of these individuals give tactical advice, but then has to take back their place.

The coach or supervisor may only leave the technical area in exceptional cases , for example if the referee allows the doctor to treat an injured player on or off the field.

The coaching zone has been part of the FIFA rules since 1993. Since 1999 the fourth official has been responsible for enforcement.
