Francesc "Tito" Vilanova i Bayó (born September 17, 1968 in Bellcaire d'Empordà , †  April 25, 2014 in Barcelona ) was a Spanish football player and football coach .

From July 1, 2012 to July 19, 2013 he was the head coach of FC Barcelona . He had taken over from Pep Guardiola , whose assistant coach he had previously been for four years.

Career

player

Vilanova played with Pep Guardiola for FC Barcelona in his youth . While Guardiola made it into the first team, Vilanova remained with FC Barcelona B . In 1990 he left Barcelona for UE Figueres , for whom he played for two years in the Segunda División and just missed promotion in the 1991/92 season. He played his first first division game on September 6, 1992 for Celta Vigo in a 2-0 away defeat against Deportivo La Coruña . During his three-year stay in Vigo, he played very little in his last two years and did not play a single game in the starting XI. The transfer to CD Badajoz followed in the summer of 1995. After a year he moved to RCD Mallorca , with whom he rose to the Primera División in the 1996/97 season . After playing for UE Lleida the following season , he joined FC Elche after that season . He finally ended his career at UDA Gramenet , where he played from 2000 to 2002.

Trainer

After his playing career, Vilanova was first coach of FC Palafrugell and later technical director of FC Terrassa . In 2007 he became an assistant coach from Pep Guardiola at FC Barcelona B . The duo led Barcelona B to promotion to Segunda División B in the 2007/08 season . Because of their success, both were promoted to the first team after FC Barcelona sacked Frank Rijkaard and his assistant coach Johan Neeskens at the end of this season. In their first coaching year at FC Barcelona in the 2008/09 season, the coaching team won the triple of championship , cup and Champions League as well as the UEFA Super Cup , the Spanish Super Cup and the Club World Cup.

On November 22, 2011, Vilanova was successfully operated on for his parotid gland cancer in the Hospital de la Vall d'Hebron. He was out for almost three weeks. The club doctor declared him "completely cured" in May 2012.

After head coach Guardiola announced his retirement at the end of the season on April 27, 2012, President Sandro named Rosell Vilanova on the same day as his successor. On June 15, 2012, he signed a corresponding contract with a term of two years until June 30, 2014.

In December 2012, Vilanova contracted parotid gland cancer again , which resulted in another operation. Vilanova then underwent six weeks of chemotherapy and radiation treatment . During this time, his assistant coach Jordi Roura took his place . Nevertheless, FC Barcelona won the championship in the Primera División in 2012/13 and, with 100 season points, set the point record that Real Madrid had set in the previous season. On July 19, 2013 his illness forced him to resign as head coach of FC Barcelona. He died on April 25, 2014 as a result of the cancer.
