Leo Swane

Leo Swane (born February 14, 1887 in Frederiksberg , Copenhagen ; died January 20, 1968 in Hillerød ) was a Danish art historian and director of the Statens Museum for Kunst in Copenhagen.

Swane was the youngest son of Leo Swane (1837–1922) and Sophie Lisbeth Rasmussen (1849–1934), he had several siblings: Lars Gustav Swane (1877–1904) and Sigurd Swane (1879–1973), who specialized in painting and Dedicated to writing, Hjalmar Swane (1881–1951), Julie Annette (born 1883), Johanne Marie Swane (1885–1896). He was married to Birtha Larsen (1911–1997) since November 10, 1944. His brother Sigurd portrayed him in 1908, the picture is in the Norwegian National Museum in Oslo.

Swane attended school until 1905 and initially studied German and Greek at the University of Copenhagen . However, he later switched to art history. He was friends with the painter Harald Giersing , who made a portrait of him in 1912. Swane came into contact with the painters' circle on Funen, where he met Johannes Larsen . He graduated without an exam. His training took place rather on numerous study trips abroad. The first trip took him to Paris in 1909. From 1910 to 1911 he stayed in London, Paris and Italy. He began in 1912 as an assistant at the Royal Copper Engraving Collection and became an inspector there in 1919. After the First World War, he traveled again, so that he came to Spain in 1926 and visited Paris again, as he was very interested in French art and culture. On his travels he put together an important Matisse collection. In 1931 he succeeded Gustav Falck as director of the Statens Museum for Kunst, a position he held until 1952. In 1957 he retired.
