Johan Christian Moberg (born February 11, 1854 in the Församling Solberga, Skurup municipality , Malmöhus län ; † December 30, 1915 in Lund ) was a Swedish paleontologist and geologist .

Life

Moberg was the son of the master gardener Johan Henrik Moberg and his wife Johanna (nee Christiansdtr). He finished school in Malmö on October 9, 1873 and enrolled on November 2, 1874 at Lund University , where he received his doctorate in philosophy on September 14, 1878 . On the advice of Sven Anders Bernhard Lundgren (1843–1879), he then studied geology from October 6, 1780 until he received his doctorate in June 1884. In his habilitation thesis Sveriges kritsystemkt framstäldt he dealt with the fossil group of cigar-shaped belemnites , which consist of the remains of extinct cephalopods and contributed to the determination of the age of the chalk sedimentary rocks in Northern Europe. In 1885 Moberg was appointed lecturer and in 1900 professor of geology and mineralogy .

During the winters between 1884 and 1887, Moberg was the palaeontological department of the Swedish Geological Authority (SGU). There he also took part in field work between 1882 and 1896. Moberg undertook several study trips at home and abroad and published a number of treatises and essays on paleontological- stratigraphic topics, including works on the chronostratigraphic systems Cambrian , Ordovician , Silurian , Lower Jurassic and Cretaceous .

Moberg repeatedly examined the fauna and zoning of the Cambrian-Silurian system and published the results in scientific journals.

In 1897 he became a member of the Royal Physiographical Society in Lund , in 1911 of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences and honorary member of the Danish Geological Association . In addition, Moberg was honorary chairman of the Lund Geological Field Club (Lunds geologiska fältklubb), which he founded in 1892 . In 1912 he became a member of the Paleontological Society .

Moberg had been married to Karna [Carin] (née Andersdtr, September 14, 1863 - January 3, 1923) since November 28, 1884. She was the daughter of the distillery owner Anders Andersson and his wife Maria (née Nilsdtr). He died in Lund in 1915 and is buried on Norra kyrkogården .
