Ekkehard May

Werner Willi Ekkehard Mai (born January 26, 1946 - † July 31, 2020 ) was a German art historian specializing in 19th century art.

Life

Ekkehard Mai studied art history , German literature and philosophy in Bonn and Berlin . In 1974 he was the subject of state portrait and art theory in the era of Louis XIV. At the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Bonn to Dr. phil. PhD. He then worked at the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin , at the Technical University of Darmstadt and as an art critic .

From 1983 until his retirement in January 2009 he was deputy director of the Wallraf-Richartz-Museum & Fondation Corboud , Cologne. Together with Stephan Waetzoldt , he led the project group of the Fritz Thyssen Foundation for Art, Culture and Politics in the German Empire . He took on teaching positions in Cologne and appeared in numerous publications on the history of art academies, exhibitions and museums, Dutch painting and history painting in Europe as well as 19th and 20th century art. Most recently he was honorary professor for general art history at the University of Cologne . Mai was regarded as a recognized specialist in 19th century art, especially at the Düsseldorf School of Painting .

Mai was buried in an urn on August 20, 2020 at the Central Cemetery in Rösrath .
