Kurt Duwell

Kurt Düwell (born July 28, 1937 in Düsseldorf ) is a German historian and professor emeritus of the History Department of the University of Düsseldorf , Chair VI (Modern History).

academic career

Düwell studied at the University of Cologne , where he with a thesis on the Rhine areas in the 1968 anti-Jewish policy of the Nazis before 1942 a PhD . He then worked as an academic adviser at the Historical Institute of RWTH Aachen University , where he de facto organized the actual university archive from 1970 onwards, following a resolution by the academic senate in 1967. In 1974 he completed his habilitation in Cologne with a thesis on German foreign cultural policy. In 1977 he was offered a chair for modern and contemporary history at the University of Trier . 1985 to 1989 he was vice dean and dean. In 1995 he followed a call to the University of Düsseldorf to succeed Peter Hüttenberger .

Düwell is a member of the Association of German Historians , the Prussian Historical Commission Berlin and the Working Group on the History of Prussia , a member of the Düsseldorf History Association and a founding member of the Brauweiler Circle for regional and contemporary history . In addition, he worked as a member and chairman of the social science study group for international problems , the Association for historical regional studies of the Rhineland and the Society for Rhenish History (chairman 1998–2002).

In addition to the ancient historian Hans Kloft and the medievalist Egon Boshof, Düwell is the author of the foundations of the study of history , which have been published in numerous editions , in which he wrote the chapter on Modern History . For all three historians, emphasis was placed on manual skills.

His successor to the Düsseldorf chair and chairman of the Brauweiler circle has been Christoph Nonn since 2003 .

Düwell was a member of the presbytery of the Evangelical Luther Church Congregation in Düsseldorf from 1997 to 2007 and is a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Association for Rhenish Church History.
