Study on the change in the power structure in the NSDAP with Karl Dietrich Bracher in Bonn for Dr. phil. From 1967 to 1971 he worked as a research assistant at the main state archive in Düsseldorf , where he gathered sources for the reconstruction of politics and administration and the early history of North Rhine-Westphalia through interviews with contemporary witnesses (especially leading politicians and civil servants) and the acquisition of legacies . These later served as the basis for his habilitation thesis North Rhine-Westphalia and the emergence of his parliamentary democracy (1973 in Bonn with Karl Dietrich Bracher). From 1974 to 1975 he headed the project Resistance and Persecution in Bavaria during the Nazi era at the Institute for Contemporary History in Munich .

In 1975 Hüttenberger became professor of contemporary history at Bielefeld University ; in the following year he took over the newly established chair for modern history with special consideration of the history of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia at the University of Düsseldorf . There he also served as Dean of the Philosophical Faculty from 1979 to 1980 and as Rector from 1980 to 1983.

In addition to the regional history of North Rhine-Westphalia, the focus of his research was the history of National Socialism , the history of the Federal Republic and European unification, as well as cultural and social-historical questions and the theory of history. Peter Hüttenberger is the founder of the series of regional and urban history publications, Düsseldorfer Schriften on recent regional history and the history of North Rhine-Westphalia, which has existed since 1980 .
