Hans Michael Piper (born May 24, 1952 in Kiel ) is a German physician and has been President of the Carl von Ossietzky University in Oldenburg since August 1, 2015 .

Life

Hans Michael Piper studied from 1971 to 1977 at the Georg-August University Göttingen , at which he Diploma in Physics (1978), the promotion of Dr. med. (1979) and the doctorate to Dr. phil. (1980) graduated. In 1982 he completed his habilitation in physiology . After research in England and Canada , he became a university lecturer (1990 C2 ) and then to associate professor appointed at the Heinrich-Heine University in Dusseldorf before 1994 an offer of a C4 professor of physiology at the University of Giessen followed . There he was director of the Physiological Institute from 1994 to 2008, and from 2001 to 2006 first as vice dean, then as dean of the medical department and as a member of the board of directors of the university hospital . In 2007 he became the founding director of the Giessen Graduate Center for Life Sciences. In 2008 he was President of the Annual Conference of the German Society for Cardiology and from 2009 to 2010 President of the German Physiological Society .

From November 1, 2008 to October 31, 2014, Piper was rector of the Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf . During his term of office, the then Federal Minister of Education Annette Schavan withdrew his doctorate from the University of Düsseldorf. On April 14, 2014, he announced that he would not stand for a second term. He was elected President of the Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg in March 2015 and took office on August 1, 2015.

Piper's scientific work includes more than 250 original papers. He has u. a. He wrote fundamental work on reperfusion damage (blood flow damage) and the associated protection of the heart as well as on the molecular control of the endothelial barrier function. From 2008 to 2011 he was a reviewer of the German Research Foundation and from 2003 to 2012 he was editor-in-chief of the journal Cardiovascular Research .

Hans Michael Piper is married to screenwriter Henriette Piper and has two grown children.
