Gert Kaiser

Gert Kaiser (born June 18, 1941 in Hardheim / Odenwald ) is a German old Germanist and emeritus university rector . He is Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Meyer Struckmann Foundation. and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Neanderthal Museum Foundation.

Career

Kaiser studied German , history and Romance studies in Heidelberg and Munich . In 1964 he received his doctorate in Heidelberg with a thesis on minnesang with Peter Wapnewski . After a habilitation grant from the German Research Foundation , he completed his habilitation in 1970 in Heidelberg with a thesis on Arthurian literature . In 1973 he was appointed Scientific Councilor and Professor . In 1977 he was appointed to the chair for older German studies at the University of Düsseldorf , which has been called Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf since 1988.

Kaiser researched and taught mainly on topics of classical medieval literature: the Arthurian novels, the Minnesang, the Nibelungenlied , Walther von der Vogelweide , Hartmann von Aue , Wolfram von Eschenbach and Gottfried von Strasbourg . His habilitation thesis on Arthurian novels and ministeriality appeared in two editions.

In 1983 he was elected rector of the University of Düsseldorf. He held the office for twenty years. During his tenure, two new faculties were founded, the Faculty of Economics and the Faculty of Law. In 1988 the university was renamed Heinrich-Heine University Düsseldorf after a long internal and public dispute.

Since 1988 he has been president of the Science Center North Rhine-Westphalia , an interface between science, society and economy.

From 1987 to 1989 he was Vice President of the West German Rectors' Conference and from 1991 to 1992 a member of the founding senate of the University of Potsdam . He taught twice at the University of California, Davis (1991 and 2007). In 1996 he was appointed founding rector of the Hanse-Wissenschaftskolleg in Delmenhorst / Lower Saxony (rejected). 2001–2005 he was a member of the advisory board of the Franz Rosenzweig Center at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem , since 2003 chairman of the German Circle of Friends of the Interdisciplinary Center in Herzliya (Israel), from 2005 to 2007 President of the German-Italian University Center. After leaving the rector's office, he was President of the Society of Friends and Supporters of Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf from 2004 to 2014. He is Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Meyer Struckmann Foundation and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Neanderthal Museum.

In addition to scientific writings, Kaiser has written articles on current topics from business, politics, science and culture.
