Sonner av Norge
Sønner av Norge ( German : Sons of Norway ) is a Norwegian song with a patriotic content. In 1820 it won a competition by the Selskapet for Norges Vel ( Society for Norway's Welfare ) for a new Norwegian national anthem, which was intended to cement Norway's independence after the union with Denmark was dissolved in 1814. Until then, the drinking song Norges Skaal was unofficially in use as the national anthem.
It was Norway's sole national anthem until 1864, before Ja, vi elsker dette landet appeared. Up until the early 20th century, however, both forms were used in parallel, Sønner av Norge mainly in formal contexts. To date, Ja, vi elsker dette lands de facto has established itself as the sole anthem, but this has never been formally established.
The lyrics by Sønner av Norge are by Henrik Anker Bjerregaard , the melody by Christian Blom . The text was written in Riksmål , an older variant of today's Norwegian standard language Bokmål , which is even more based on the Danish language .
A modern version of this piece appeared in 2003 on the album Evige Asatro the viking rock band Glittertind .
