Life

He is known as the composer of the Norwegian song Sønner av Norge (Sons of Norway) from 1821, with which he won the Norges Vel (The Welfare of Norway) competition for a Norwegian national anthem in the same year. The song remained very popular during the 19th century, but was replaced by today's national anthem Ja, vi elsker dette landet in 1864 . His overture Norsk Nationalouverture (1821) for choir and orchestra, for which his national anthem provided thematic material, enjoyed particular popularity .

He played the cello , violin and flute as a good amateur . In 1814 he founded a musical society in Drammen, which was the musical center of the city until 1840. In 1823 he co-founded a singing school, and from 1849 he devoted himself to male singing.

He mainly composed choral works, but his three extant string quartets are now considered his most important works. His music reveals influences from the Viennese classic and early romantic periods , but there are occasional allusions to Norwegian folk music .
