Kurt-Jürgen Maaß (born July 28, 1943 in Elmshorn , Germany ) is a German cultural manager, scientist and former Secretary General of the Institute for Foreign Relations .

education

Maaß studied law and economics in Hamburg and Lausanne , received his doctorate in Hamburg in 1969 with a thesis on the Council of Europe and in November 1972, after a legal traineeship in Hamburg, Strasbourg and Speyer, passed the second state examination in law.

Job and life

After completing his studies, he first worked as an editor at the Deutsche Universitäts-Zeitung in Bonn , then as director of the committees for science and economy at the North Atlantic Assembly in Brussels and then (from 1977) as a speaker at the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in Bonn. This was followed by tasks in the Federal Ministry of Education and Science in Bonn and a department head at the Science Council in Cologne. In 1988 Maaß returned to the Humboldt Foundation as Head of Department and was also Deputy Secretary General from 1994. From 1998 to 2008 he was Secretary General of the Institute for Foreign Cultural Relations in Stuttgart and editor of the magazine culture exchange .

From 2001 to 2013 he held teaching positions at the universities of Stuttgart, Tübingen , Bamberg and at the Azerbaidjan Diplomatic Academy in Baku . In 2005, the University of Tübingen awarded him an honorary professorship at the Institute for Political Science.

He was chairman of the board of trustees at the Forum der Kulturen in Stuttgart from 2009 to 2015.

In 2018 he received the Cross of Merit 1st Class of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany.

He is married and has three children.

Maaß has published numerous books and over 100 essays on questions of international academic exchange, foreign cultural policy and international cultural relations.
