The Forum of Cultures Stuttgart e. V. is the umbrella organization for migrant associations and intercultural institutions in Stuttgart. Founded in 1998 by 20 clubs, it now has over 130 member clubs. It is also the point of contact for over 300 migrant organizations in the Stuttgart region . It is committed to intercultural dialogue , cultural diversity and equal participation of immigrants in social and cultural life.

Activities include the Summer Festival of Cultures, the Theater Festival Made in Germany, productions by the intercultural theater ensemble, intercultural breakfast meetings and discussion forums as well as the publication of the intercultural monthly magazine Encounter of Cultures - Interkultur in Stuttgart . The Forum der Kulturen also heads the Initiativkreis Interkulturelle Stadt (IKIS), an association of interculturally active cultural institutions.

tasks

The Forum of Cultures sees its task in making the wealth of cultural diversity visible and promoting the potential that an immigration society harbors. With its various projects and activities, the Forum der Kulturen contributes to strengthening and expanding the social, cultural and political participation of the migrant population. The Forum der Kulturen Stuttgart acts as a partner in the cultural life of the region as well as in various integration, social and educational contexts. The association is also active in the field of development policy. It is part of a broad-based intercultural network, in the municipality as well as at the state and federal level, and helps shape the intercultural discourse in Germany through various events (such as the Federal Interculture Congress).

The concept of the House of Resources is intended to enable the expansion and increasing professionalism of work with migrant associations. This is intended to expand and improve offers and optimize advisory and mediation work. Clubs are offered, for example, premises, technical aids, specialist speakers, financial help, lawyers or tax advisors.

Project days of the Stuttgart migrant associations

The annual project days are aimed at all associations, institutions and organizations that want to cooperate with one another in areas such as culture, social affairs, education, development cooperation, work with refugees, prejudice or discrimination. They are a platform on which new contacts can be made and ideas can be developed.

Magazine Encounter of Cultures - Interkultur in Stuttgart

Since 2001, the free intercultural program magazine of the Forum der Kulturen Stuttgart e. Has appeared monthly, with the exception of the summer (three-month edition) and at the turn of the year (two-month edition). V. with an intercultural event calendar and service section, information from the migrant organizations , portraits of migrant artists as well as cultural and socio-political background articles. The magazine Encounter of Cultures - Interkultur in Stuttgart has a circulation of 15,000 to 16,000 copies and is available in cultural centers , cinemas, institutions , restaurants and international cultural associations.

Since the summer of 2017, the annual special edition for the Summer Festival of Cultures has also been published with background information on the bands, participating migrant associations, cooperations and reports.

Since 2003 the Forum der Kulturen Stuttgart e. V. the Summer Festival of Cultures once a year . For six days, bands from all over the world play on the Stuttgart market square and the migrant associations take part both with the preparation of food from all over the world and with artistic contributions. At the market of cultures, which takes place in the side streets of the market square, you can buy handicrafts and jewelry, clothes, bags, tea and spices from different countries.

The festival now attracts around 85,000 visitors and is seen as an asset to the city. In a comment in the Stuttgarter Zeitung it says: “Rolf Graser from the Forum der Kulturen deserves the honorary citizenship of Stuttgart for the level of quality with which he makes the marketplace happy every year. His festival is so important for Stuttgart that it should actually take place monthly. "

A number of well-known bands have already played at the Summer Festival of Cultures. These included: Karamelo Santo , Che Sudaka , Äl Jawala , Amsterdam Klezmer Band , Boban Marković , Hugh Masekela , Natacha Atlas , Chupacabras , Babylon Circus , Habib Koité , Pippo Pollina , Locomondo , Bukahara , Ana Tijoux , Fanfare Ciocărlia and Orange Blossom .

Other culture formats

  • Made in Germany , the intercultural theater festival: Current intercultural productions are on the program at this theater festival. Groups from all over Germany are guests in Stuttgart for five days - from state theater ensembles to independent theater groups. They present collages, comedies, documentaries and much more at ten Stuttgart venues. Another special feature is the program selection. The decision is not made by the organizers, but by a jury made up of spectators interested in the theater, whose composition reflects the cultural diversity of the Stuttgart residents. With this citizen jury, “Made in Germany” wants to create an instrument of participation and at the same time show organizers and cultural institutions a way to open up intercultural issues.
  • Made in Stuttgart , the intercultural theater weekend: every two years, Stuttgart theaters, together with the audience and artists, organize a weekend for local intercultural productions and projects in Stuttgart. The program includes theater performances, readings, films, dance and concerts for adults as well as for children and young people.
  • brunch global , the intercultural breakfast meeting point: brunch global is organized by the Forum der Kulturen Stuttgart e. V. organizes three times a year. The Sunday cultural breakfast is aimed at all interested and / or active people who want to set new impulses for intercultural life in the city.
  • Theater workshops with writing workshops and the production of own pieces
  • the cultural weekend HeadAttack! , since 2015
  • Ziryab Academy for World Music : Here musical traditions from all regions of the world are closely related to classical, jazz, rock or pop. The academy offers interested musicians from the region a world music education. The Ziryab Academy for World Music was initiated by the Forum der Kulturen Stuttgart e. V. under the artistic direction of the Georgian guitarist and composer Zaza Miminoshvili (known from The Shin ).

Networks

The Forum der Kulturen initiated numerous networks in the municipality, at state and federal level, or was involved in their creation:

  • the Initiativkreis Interkulturelle Stadt (IKIS), an association of cultural and educational institutions in Stuttgart that want to promote intercultural dialogue and the international cultural committee. The working group is headed by the Forum of Cultures.
  • the Stuttgart network against group- related enmity, discrimination and racism : together with the Integration Department of the City of Stuttgart, the Forum of Cultures initiated this network. It sees itself as an open dialogue and action network and is open to other actors, associations and initiatives.
  • the nationwide advice on cultural diversity , a group of interculturally active personalities and institutions in the wider context of the cultural and political society and the German UNESCO Commission. The Forum der Kulturen plays a decisive role in this group and is represented by its managing director Rolf Graser on the advisory board.
