The Brauweiler Kreis für Landes- und Zeitgeschichte eV is an association based in Düsseldorf for representatives of universities, archives and research institutions in Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands as well as for all those who are scientifically concerned with "regional history" ( Walter Först ).

The focus of work is in the 20th century . However, this does not rule out his preoccupation with previous strands or older phases of history. The association has set itself the task of promoting scientific exchange and research on the history of northwest Germany and its neighboring areas as well as on the history of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia . The annual scientific conference of the Brauweiler Kreis, which takes place in March, offers a forum for the discussion of historical research topics from these areas.

In recent years, the Brauweiler district has organized specialist conferences on the following topics:

  • Musealization of War in the Region (2012)
  • History sells. City, space, identity (Münster 2013)
  • Gender and Region (Gelsenkirchen 2014)
  • Europe and Region - North Rhine-Westphalia, Belgium and the Netherlands (Düsseldorf 2015)
  • Rhineland, Westphalia and Prussia in the Weimar Republic (Pulheim-Brauweiler 2016)
  • Migration - cultural transfer - culture of remembrance (Duisburg 2017)
  • The Cold War in the region (Schleiden / Eifel 2018)

The results of the conferences are published in the journal “ Geschichte im Westen ”, which is published by Klartext Verlag Essen. In addition, the Brauweiler Kreis initiates projects and serves as a point of contact for everyone who is interested in regional and contemporary history , bundling the diverse competencies of its members .

Since 2017, the Brauweiler Kreis has also published the “History of North Rhine-Westphalia” series, which is published by Greven Verlag Cologne.

Sabine Mecking has been chairwoman of the association since 2012 , and before that Christoph Nonn (2004–2012), Kurt Düwell and Peter Hüttenberger were chairmen of the association.
