Otto Janssen

Otto Janssen (born July 8, 1883 in Düsseldorf ; † May 16, 1967 there ) was a German philosopher .

Life

Otto Janssen was a son of the painter Johann Peter Theodor Janssen and his Jewish wife Constanze Gottschalk (1852–1931). After graduating from the Städtisches Gymnasium Düsseldorf , he studied German, Romance studies and philosophy and received his doctorate in Bonn in 1908 . In 1912 he was at the University of Strasbourg habilitation and was there until 1918 as a lecturer. From 1916 he was a soldier in the First World War . He became a private lecturer in Münster in 1919 and an associate professor for logic in the humanities in 1921. From 1929 to 1932 he was professor of philosophy and education at the newly established Pedagogical Academy in Dortmund , his position fell victim to the savings decisions, after which he resumed his teaching position in Münster. His writings were ignored by his peers.

After the transfer of power to the Nazis , he was a half-Jew in November 1933 due to the Law for the Restoration of the Professional Civil the teaching license revoked at the University of Münster. He was not considered a front-line fighter because the troop unit he belonged to was not counted as part of the fighting force. He was retired in March 1934.

In 1946 he received another teaching post for epistemology and logic at the University of Münster and gave lectures until 1958.

Janssen was married to Ida Rothstein. One cousin was the pharmacologist Sigurd Janssen , the cousin Gerda had married into the Düsseldorf industrial family Henkel . The painter Peter Janssen d. J. was a nephew.
