Life

On the way home (brushwood collector) , probably 1870s

Emma Elwin, daughter of Georg Friedrich Neussel, married the British officer Robert Baker Elwin (* 1826). This last served the British Army in the rank of lieutenant in the 3rd Montgomeryshire Rifle Volunteer Corps and resigned on December 15, 1861 from this position. The couple had a daughter, Emilie Johanna († 1948), who was born in London on June 20, 1858 . Emma Elwin lived in Düsseldorf - Pempelfort from 1877 at the latest . The address book of the mayor's office in Düsseldorf lists her for this year as the wife of Robert Elwin and as a resident of Pempelforter Straße 67, in 1882 she lived - still as a "wife" - at Feldstraße 70. The address book from 1887 shows her as a "widow" Elwins and at Rosenstrasse 28. At that time, her son-in-law was the Brazilian- born Swiss painter Robert von Steiger . On October 11, 1882, he married her daughter. When Emma Elwin moved to Honnef in 1890 , but was still registered at Mozartstrasse 13, her daughter and son-in-law lived there with their three children.

Emma Elwin worked as a genre painter in Düsseldorf, where she was represented at exhibitions of the Kunstverein für die Rheinlande und Westfalen from 1873 to 1877 . She lived temporarily in Staines-upon-Thames near London, from where she sent an exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts in 1879 with a portrait and a still life.
