The building insurance Berne (GVB) is a 1807 established under public law , financially independent insurance companies of the Canton of Bern , which is guided by principles of private enterprise. Legal basis for the activity of GVB forms the law on the building insurance of Canton Bern (GVG).

Basic insurance against fire and natural hazards from GVB is mandatory for all homeowners in the canton of Bern. This creates synergies that lead to lower premiums and appropriate solidarity. The main task also includes elementary and fire prevention, which GVB is strongly committed to. In addition, the GVB, with its internal fire brigade inspectorate, is the strategic supervisory body of the fire brigades in the canton of Bern.

The GVB also ensures compliance with fire protection requirements in building permit procedures for new buildings and renovations and checks fire safety in buildings with a high number of people.

Corporate structure

The private law subsidiaries GVB Privatversicherungen AG and GVB Services AG offer voluntary supplementary insurance and other services around the house. Through this diversification, among other things, the GVB Group is reducing the risk of natural events, which has increased due to climate change , and is keeping its premiums low.

GVB Private Insurance AG

GVB Privatversicherung AG is a subsidiary of the Gebäudeversicherung Bern (GVB) under private law and is subject to the Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority (FINMA) . Your insurance products complement the mandatory building insurance.

GVB Services AG

GVB Services AG is a subsidiary of the Gebäudeversicherung Bern (GVB) under private law and offers various services for everything to do with the house, such as integral fire protection advice by SafeT Swiss, the prevention app “ Weather Alarm ” and the hausinfo.ch platform.

engagement

Climate commitment

As an insurer of natural hazards, GVB is directly affected by the effects of climate change. That is why GVB is committed to climate protection in a variety of ways and, with its climate strategy defined in 2007, is gradually striving for CO 2 -neutral business activities.

Fire prevention

The GVB regularly launches prevention campaigns and tries to sensitize the Bernese population to various topics. As a preventive measure , it provides the schools in the canton of Bern with the " Zouber-Chischte ", which is intended to help teach students how to deal with fire correctly. With the “Guardian Angel” campaign, the GVB is giving all newborns in the Canton of Bern a smoke alarm on behalf of the community and the fire brigade . For personal safety, ash pails are also offered for storing ashes and embers.

Elementary prevention

The Foundation for Prevention and Uninsured Building Damage established by the GVB supports preventive measures and uninsured building damage is borne.

Cultural engagement

With the GVB Kulturstiftung, the GVB supports selected projects in the fields of culture, education, society and science. In doing so, the foundation tries to enable a wide range of cultural activities in the canton of Bern.

history

Due to the compulsory insurance and the insurance monopoly, every building in the canton of Bern is insured with the GVB. This makes it one of the best-known institutions in the Canton of Bern. In the course of time, various events in the canton of Bern have resulted in the GVB's legal mandate being expanded. Other tasks have been added, from fire fighting to climate research. The most important milestones in the history of building insurance are listed below:

year
1807 Establishment of the fire insurance institute of the canton of Bern (BVA, today's GVB) with around 6,000 insured buildings and a total insurance value of around CHF 20 million, initially for a trial period of 25 years. Insurance of buildings against fire damage at fair value with a flat rate.
