Beat Kappeler (born September 11, 1946 in Villmergen ; resident in Oberwangen ) is a Swiss economist , journalist and author .

Life

Kappeler attended the Flade secondary school in St. Gallen and completed a high school in Gossau SG . After graduating from high school, he studied world economics and international law at the Institut de Hautes Etudes Internationales at the University of Geneva . In 1970 he graduated with a degree in Political Sciences .

From 1977 to 1992 he was secretary of the Swiss Confederation of Trade Unions , entrusted with liberalization dossiers in competition, world trade and economic policy. Since then he has been a freelance business journalist and book author . From 1993 to 2002 Kappeler was an author for Weltwoche .

From 1996 to 2000 he was Associate Professor of Social Policy at the University Institute for Public Administration (IDHEAP) in Lausanne .

Kappeler represents market-based solutions in social and monetary policy. From March 2002 to October 2018 he was a columnist for NZZ am Sonntag . He writes columns in Le Temps , longer essays in the Swiss month and was a guest on the television show Arena .

Awards

He is married to Franziska Rogger , father of two sons, and lives in Hinterkappelen .
