The Arena is a political discussion program on current topics on Swiss radio and television . It is broadcast every Friday at 10:20 p.m. on SRF 1 . Prominent politicians, experts and those affected are invited to the program to discuss a current topic in Swiss politics. In the run-up to an election, programs are usually devoted to the topics of the upcoming votes . In the middle there are two to five main opponents, in the ring around it are other politicians and experts. The name Arena indicates the confrontational nature of the discussion broadcast.

The arena has become an important factor in the formation of political opinion in German-speaking Switzerland, so that Swiss parliamentarians are often asked to be “arena-friendly”.

history

The arena was created in 1993 as a further development of the program “Friday Round”. Innovations compared to the “Friday Round” were the elimination of external productions, the replacement of the changing team of moderators by Filippo Leutenegger , the arena-like decor with spectators and the escalation of a confrontation between two (or four) political exponents. The show was an immediate success and doubled the audience share.

Filippo Leutenegger moderated the arena until 1999. Patrick Rohr then took over the moderation until 2002. The number of front-row panelists was increased to six or more. As a result, the market share fell. In 2002 Urs Leuthard became the new arena presenter. The concept was retained for the time being, but the number of opponents was then reduced. In addition to the moderator, the arena team consisted of the two producers Marianne Gilgen and Franziska Ingold and the production assistant Katharina Haag.

From April 2008 until the end of 2010 Reto Brennwald moderated the arena. From 2011 to 2014 Sonja Hasler was the presenter of the show. Urs Wiedmer joined them in February 2011, alternating between hosting the show with Hasler. Marianne Gilgen has been the editor-in-chief since April 2008. In summer 2008 the concept of the discussion and the studio were revised. The concept is similar to that of the western Swiss Infrarouge on TSR 1 . From the beginning of 2014 to the end of April 2019, the program was moderated by Jonas Projer and the concept was heavily revised. There are now two experts and only 4 guests in the inner ring and 2-3 in the outer ring. Sandro Brotz has been the new moderator since May 2019 .

Moderators

criticism

Moderator Jonas Projer has been criticized by some media for offering the Swiss People's Party too prominent a platform through tendentious topics.

On the other hand, the bourgeoisie and, in particular, the SVP-affiliated side criticized the fact that Sandro Brotz, a moderator who had repeatedly attracted attention through tendentiously left-wing reporting, was taking over.
