GUSTAVO cantons
The GUSTAVO cantons are the Swiss cantons in which building insurance against fire and natural hazards can or must be taken out with a private insurance company instead of cantonal insurance.
The following cantons belong to the GUSTAVO cantons:
The cantons of Geneva, Ticino, Appenzell Innerrhoden and Wallis are the only four cantons in which building insurance is not compulsory. In the cantons of Uri, Schwyz and Obwalden, building insurance is compulsory, but not through the cantonal building insurance, but through private insurance.
An exception is the Oberegg district in the canton of Appenzell Innerrhoden , which, unlike the rest of the canton, has compulsory insurance with the Oberegg district building insurance company, which is part of the district administration .
The Insurance Contract Act (VVG) specifically regulates the possibility of termination in the cantons with compulsory insurance for buildings against fire and natural hazards, but without a monopoly of an insurer. According to Article 54 Paragraph 2, the policy (the insurance contract) is transferred from the previous policyholder (property seller) to the new owner (property buyer) (becomes the new policyholder) unless the latter terminates the contract in writing within 30 days.
