The Association of Cantonal Fire Insurance Companies (VKF) was founded in 1903 and performs two central roles: As the umbrella organization, it represents the interests of the Cantonal Building Insurance Companies (KGV). In addition, the VKF is the service and competence center for all activities in the area of prevention against fire and natural hazards at national and international level. Further activities include training specific specialists in fire protection and building protection against natural hazards. In these training areas, the VKF is the only federally accredited certification body .

The Union
- is responsible for drawing up the Swiss fire protection regulations as a legal basis. It develops technical guidelines and recommendations and provides information on fire protection issues with specialist articles and press releases.
- is responsible for the coordination and standardization of fire protection in Switzerland and its harmonization with the EU .
- looks after the Swiss hail register . Building materials and components are listed on this public Internet platform and classified according to their hail resistance . The classification is based on the results of extensive laboratory tests.
- is the federally accredited certification body for the training of specialists in the areas of fire protection and building protection against natural hazards. The VKF training "Fire Protection Specialist" has been federally recognized since 2012 and can be completed with the title "Fire Protection Specialist with Federal Certificate".
The prevention foundation
In 2003, the prevention foundation of the cantonal building insurance was brought into being. It pursues the goal of promoting integral risk management in the field of natural hazards. The Prevention Foundation supports projects by independent individuals, groups of people or corporations under private or public law that help reduce damage caused by natural hazards in Switzerland.
The "Secure and Insure" system
The VKF integrates loss prevention, loss control and claims settlement into the comprehensive system "Secure and Insure". The three areas of responsibility influence each other. In addition to the protection of property, the VKF also contributes to increasing personal protection.
