Hail register

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The hail register of the Association of Cantonal Fire Insurance Companies (VKF) is a Swiss online platform on which different products of the building envelope are classified according to their hail resistance.

Classification and purpose

In order to determine the hail resistance of the components and building materials, the VKF, in cooperation with renowned test institutes, arranges extensive and realistic laboratory tests. The elements of the building envelope are bombarded with ice balls of different sizes. The various hail resistance classes are assigned based on the damage incurred. These range from HW 1 to HW 5. A hail resistance of HW3 means, for example, that the product can withstand a hailstone three centimeters in diameter and with a mass of 12.3 grams at an impact speed of 86 km / h without damage. The relevant damage criteria, depending on the product, include waterproofness, light transmission, light shielding, mechanics and appearance. The use of classified products thus supports hail-resistant construction and can help prevent building damage.

In 2011 the hail register was also introduced in Austria .
