Wilhelm von Diesbach (* 1442 in Bern ; † December 28, 1517 ) was mayor of Bern . He comes from the Bernese patrician family von Diesbach .

Life

Wilhelm von Diesbach was born as the son of Ludwig von Diesbach († 1452), Knight of Jerusalem and Kleinrat, and Elisabeth von Runs. Von Diesbach received his education in the house of his cousin Niklaus von Diesbach . After a time as a page in the French count house De Foix, he studied in Paris. In 1466 he was accepted into the Bern Council of Two Hundred . He went on a pilgrimage to Jerusalem to accompany his cousin Niklaus and was then knighted together with him in 1467. In 1475 he became a small councilor and in 1478 he became second secretary of the council. From 1481 he was repeatedly mayor of Bern, interrupted from 1492–98 as 1st secretary from the council.

Wilhelm von Diesbach led Bernese troops into the field several times, for example in the Burgundian Wars , the Swabian War of 1499 and the Wars of Milan 1500–15 . He was also in demand throughout Switzerland as a mediator, arbitrator and negotiator, around 1481 in the Stans Decree and in 1495 as envoy alongside Adrian II von Bubenberg at the Reichstag in Worms . His participation in the Eternal Peace with France (1516) was his last political work.

Wilhelm von Diesbach married Dorothea von Hallwyl first in 1471, Helene von Freiberg in 1479 and Anastasia Schwend in 1501. He owned the dominions Worb , Signau, Holligen and Oberdiessbach , half of which was also the dominion of Twann.

The Bernese statesman and bailiff Ludwig von Diesbach (1452-1527) was his brother, the Bernese mayor Sebastian von Diesbach (1481-1537) his nephew.
