Life

Rudolf von Erlach was the son of Petermann von Erlach and Adelheid Isabella Haller von Courtelary. In 1471 he married Barbara von Praroman, daughter of Johann von Praroman, and in 1492 Barbara von Scharnachtal , daughter of Kaspar von Scharnachtal. Erlach was a knight and a member of the Society for Thistle Compulsion . He owned the dominions Bümpliz, Hindelbank, Riggisberg, Reichenbach, Ried, Wyl and Jegenstorf . As bailiff for the Counts of Chalon, he administered the County of Erlach, which became a Bernese bailiff in 1474 through the occupation of Bern. Erlach administered this as the first bailiff in Bern. In the same year he was also mayor of Burgdorf . From 1471 he was a member of the Bernese Grand Council, 1476 a member of the Small Council and from 1479 until his death, with interruptions, Schultheiss von Bern. In 1478 he was the federal envoy to Bellinzona and mediated between the bishop of Sion and Savoy in 1506/07. As a castvogt he managed the monasteries Rüeggisberg , Hettiswil and Thorberg as well as the collegiate monastery St. Vinzenz in Bern. He campaigned for the pre-Reformation church and monastery reform. He commissioned Diebold Schilling with the Spiezer Chronicle . Konrad Türst dedicated his work De situ confoederatorum descriptio (1495–97) to him.

In the Spiezer Chronik, Rudolf von Erlach's ancestral sample is depicted on a board with his family and ancestral coats of arms (coat of arms of the mother, Adelheid Haller von Courtelary; the grandmother, Margarete von Grasburg; the great-grandmother, Anna von Oltingen, and the great-great-grandmother Eva von Utzigen). “In Alto Est Lux” was the corresponding emblem , abbreviated to “I · A · E · L”.
