Franz Niklaus König (born April 6, 1765 in Bern ; † March 27, 1832 ) was a Swiss genre and portrait painter .

After training with Tiberius and Marquard Wocher, Sigmund Freudenberger and Balthasar Anton Dunker , he made a name for himself with traditional costumes , rural genre scenes and landscapes . He had great success with his banners , which he presented while traveling in Switzerland, Germany and France for an entrance fee. Johann Heinrich Meyer and Goethe , for whom he gave a private screening, critically appraised the fashionable transparent paintings of König. In 1797 he moved with his family to the Bernese Oberland and in 1798 he took part in the battle against the French as captain of the artillery . He was one of the initiators of the first Unspunnen festivals in 1805 and 1808 .
