Sigmund Freudenberger (born June 16, 1745 in Bern , † November 15, 1801 in Bern) was a Swiss painter.

Life

Sigmund Freudenberger was born in 1745 as the son of the Bern lawyer Gottlieb Sigmund Freudenberger. He received his first artistic training from Emanuel Handmann in Bern. Together with Adrian Zingg he continued his education from 1765 to 1773 in Paris , where he made acquaintance with François Boucher , Jean-Baptiste Greuze , Noël Hallé , Alexander Roslin and Johann Georg Wille .

Back in Bern, Freudenberger settled down as a portraitist and genre painter in oil and pastel in the style of Lancret and Watteau . He also founded a private art academy in Bern . From 1778 privileged to do this , he successfully switched to gouache etchings with staged events from Swiss country life. He orientated himself so far on the Parisian taste that he was accused in the Journal des Luxus und der Moden that he had put Boucher's girls in the clothes of Oberhasli .

Freudenberger, who last suffered a stroke, died in Bern in 1801.
