The castle Geristein (or Gerenstein ) is the ruin of a medieval hilltop castle from the 11th century and is located in the municipality of Bolligen in the canton of Bern .
Location and description
The castle ruins are located above Bolligen on a rock ridge. It is easy to recognize as a Savoyard round tower was built on top of the castle ruins at a later date . The ruins were restored between 1975 and 1976.
history
The castle was the ancestral seat of the Barons von Geristein. The castle was built as a wooden castle in the 11th century and built of stone over time. It served to protect and control the route between the city of Bern and Aargau . At the beginning of the 13th century those of Geristein died out and the castle and manor had different owners. In 1298 the castle, which was owned by the von Montenach people at the time, was destroyed by the Bernese after the battle of Dornbühl and not rebuilt.
