Michael Staack

Michael Staack (born March 24, 1959 in Stelle ) is a German political scientist and has been a professor at the Helmut Schmidt University / University of the Federal Armed Forces in Hamburg since 2006 .

Life

From 1977 to 1984 Staack studied political science, public law and modern history at the University of Hamburg and the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn . He graduated with a degree in political science in 1984 with Wolf Graf von Baudissin, among others . At the same time he was a research assistant to William Borm , the former senior president of the German Bundestag . From 1985 to 1986 Staack was a fellow of the Volkswagen Foundation Research Fellow at the Department of Government at Georgetown University and at the Brookings Institution in Washington, DC He was then a research assistant at the Free University of Berlin . In 1987, Helga Haftendorn in the Political Science department received her doctorate as Dr. phil. with the dissertation Critique of Détente and Arms Control Policy Decision-Making Process in the USA. American politics between external crises and internal social disputes 1981–1987 .

In 1988 Staack was a fellow of the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation . From 1990 to 1994 he worked at the Center for Transatlantic Foreign and Security Policy at the Free University of Berlin and from 1994/95 as a visiting professor at the University of Essen . From 1995 to 1997 Staack was a scholarship holder of the German Research Foundation and completed his habilitation in 1997 in the Department of Political Science with the thesis Handelsstaat Deutschland. German foreign policy in a new international system . From 1998 to 2001 he set up the Institute for German Studies at the European Humanistic University in Minsk as founding director. He then moved to the University of the Federal Armed Forces in Munich as Professor of International Politics and Director of the Institute for International Politics, Security Policy and International Law . There he headed the “Internationalization” working group in 2003/04. In 2004 he was visiting professor at the Faculty of International Relations at Peking University .

In 2006, Staack accepted an appointment at the Helmut Schmidt University, where he has been W3 or C4 professor for political science, in particular the theory and empirical knowledge of international relations. In Hamburg he has also been a member of the Scientific Advisory Board at the Institute for Theology and Peace since 2009. In 2014 and 2017, he was visiting professor at Beijing Foreign Language University and China Foreign Affairs University. In 2010 he was vice dean and in 2011/12 he was dean of the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences at the Hamburg University of the Armed Forces.

In addition, Staack has been working at the Bundeswehr Leadership Academy (FüAkBw) in Hamburg since 2006 , where he became President of the Scientific Forum for International Security (WIFIS). Since 2008 he has also been a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Institute for Peace Research and Security Policy at the University of Hamburg (IFSH) and since 2009 a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Institute for Theology and Peace (ITHF) in Hamburg. Since 2014 he has been a member of the high-level advisory group of the Foreign Ministers of Germany and South Korea on foreign policy aspects of the reunification of Korea. Michael Staack has also been a member of the Clausewitz Society's Advisory Board since 2015 and Chairman of the Board since 2016 .
