from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Scientific Forum for International Security (WIFIS) is a registered association based in Hamburg . WIFIS is close to the Bundeswehr Leadership Academy (FüAkBw) in Hamburg and has its address there. It is a successor organization established in 1991 to the working group for defense research (AfW) in Stuttgart, financed from the 1950s by the Federal Ministry of Defense (BMVg) , which was most recently headed by Jürgen Rohwer .

WIFIS is an established security policy discussion platform whose declared aim is to establish a dialogue between the military and science, but also the media and the administration. To this end, the association encourages interdisciplinary discussions and scientific publications in the field of security and defense policy. Annual meetings are held in Hamburg and Vienna, and a series of publications is published by Barbara Budrich Verlag (from 1995 to 2010 in Edition Temmen ). In addition, the WIFIS current series provides irregular information with short articles on current challenges.

In 2007 the association had 250 national and international members. A representative of the FüAkBw is represented on the WIFIS board, for which the association is supported in various ways. Political scientist Michael Staack ( Helmut Schmidt University / University of the Federal Armed Forces Hamburg ) has been president of the organization since 2006 . He is supported by two deputies, Jörn Thießen (Director at FüAkBw) and Gunther Hauser , and a managing director, Dan Krause (Helmut Schmidt University / University of the Federal Armed Forces Hamburg).

A former managing director is Hans Krech , who was in office from 2001 to 2016; Wilfried Gerhard is the former Deputy President and Eckardt Opitz is the former President.
