features

Wheeler's partner goby is 6.5 to 8 cm long. Their bodies are cylindrical and patterned with reddish brown and white cross bars. The dorsal and caudal fins are covered with red-brown points, a red-brown band runs along the base of the anal fin. There is a red-brown line on the lower part of the caudal fin. The pelvic fins have grown together like the goby and are dotted blue.

Way of life

Wheeler's partner goby usually lives in pairs and in symbiosis with the shrimp Alpheus ochrostriatus or Alpheus djeddensis in a cave in the seabed formed by coarse pieces of limestone, coral fragments and sand. The almost blind popcorn digs the cave, maintains constant contact with the gobies with its feelers and is warned by them in case of danger. The gobies feed mainly on small crustaceans living on the ground (e.g. amphipods ).
