About this picture

Laucha an der Unstrut (pronunciation ~ Unschtrut ~) is a town in the Burgenland district in southern Saxony-Anhalt (Germany). It belongs to the Unstruttal community based in the city of Freyburg (Unstrut) .

geography

The city on the Unstrut is located in the Saale-Unstrut wine-growing region on the B 176 between Bad Bibra and Freyburg and on the Unstrut Railway from Naumburg (Saale) to Artern . Laucha is part of the Saale-Unstrut-Triasland nature park . To the north and south of the valley rise the mountains, the subsoil of which consists of shell limestone and those above of red sandstone . The northern slope edges are used as a fruit and wine growing area. Already in 1402 there was a reference about viticulture in the Lauchaer Flur. The slopes in the south are wooded.

The districts of Burgscheidungen , Dorndorf , Kirchscheidungen , Plößnitz and Tröbsdorf belong to Laucha an der Unstrut .

history

Laucha is a former street village on the old military road Langensalza - Freyburg - Merseburg . However, prehistoric finds indicate a settlement from the Neolithic Age. The name of the city comes from the Slavic ( Lochow , Lochowo , Luchow , Luchowe , Luchowa , Luchonwe , Lachaw , Lauchau and Luchau , Laucha ) and means something like "swampy terrain" or "swampy meadow" . This points to a former swamp of the Unstrut area. The Unstrut forms the northern limit of the place.

For the first time 926 Luchau is mentioned with a Freihof. Laucha does not appear again until 1124. Laucha - a rich, prosperous city - received city rights through the vassal King Wenzel of Bohemia , Landgrave Duke Friedrich the Younger of Meißen . However, the city has often been pillaged and pillaged by war hordes. In addition, over the centuries, Laucha suffered great damage not only from wars but also from natural disasters. The place recovered economically again and again. Despite repeated fires, a number of valuable historical buildings can still be found.

A knightly family named themselves after the place, the nobles von Laucha , who were related to the von Hessler and von Burkersroda families in tribal and coat of arms.

Until 1815 Laucha belonged to the Wettin , later Electoral Saxon office of Freyburg . The decisions of the Congress of Vienna led to Prussia and in 1816 the county Querfurt in the administrative district of Merseburg of the Province of Saxony assigned to which it belonged until the 1944th

On October 1, 1889, the Unstrutbahn Naumburg – Artern began operating, which is why previous freight transports on the Unstrut steadily declined. In 1914, the Prussian State Railroad opened the Laucha-Kölleda line . The Laucha station , now a separation station, experienced a significance that was previously unknown. The sugar and canning factories, among others, benefited from this. In 1890 the city fathers of Laucha intended to demolish the "Obertor" of Laucha, an architectural rarity, for traffic reasons. Fortunately, this was not allowed by the Prussian administrative and monument protection authorities. The gate was thoroughly renovated by 1897.

In 1914, the Prussian State Railroad opened the Kölleda – Laucha line in three sections.

On April 12, 1945, American fighter-bombers attacked the city with bombs and on-board weapons, even though it was already partially occupied by US ground forces. A number of houses were badly damaged; 11 residents died, mostly women and children.

On July 1, 1950, the previously independent community of Dorndorf was incorporated.

On July 1, 2009, the formerly independent communities Burgscheidungen and Kirchscheidungen were incorporated.
