Finds from the Iron Age

On the Burgstadel (site of an abandoned, disappeared castle) near Schönburg, the Friedrich Schiller University Jena has archaeologically documented a pit and a ditch. The dating of the pit takes place via the pottery in the Iron Age . The trench can be dated to the Middle Ages through the pottery found in it . During another excavation on the Fachberg in Schönburg, two trenches recognized in the aerial photo were cut in 2006. Iron Age ceramics were found in the upper filling of the trench as well as in some findings, and late Bronze Age finds in some findings .

The Castle Schoenburg was first documented in 1137. Basically built from 1175 to 1250, according to a legend it was founded by Ludwig the Springer . The noble families von Schönberg and von Schönburg derive their descent from here.

The Burgward Schoenburg east of Naumburg formed with twelve surrounding villages since the 12th century a larger to Hochstift Naumburg / Zeitz related goods district, from the late Middle Ages the Stiftisches Office Schoenburg with the places Schoenburg, Poss grove and proportionately Gröbitz and Plotha emerged. The Schönburg settlement initially consisted of a few houses around the castle in which castle servants lived. Due to profound changes in agriculture in the 13th and 14th centuries and as a result of the devastation in the Saxon fratricidal war (1446-1451), the places Babendorf, Böllnitz, Bohndorf, Kathewitz, Öblitz, Pfaffendorf and two villages Possenhain were given up. In order to find better protection from danger, the inhabitants of these places moved closer to the castle, which resulted in today's village of Schönburg.

In 1544, the office, castle and town of Schönburg were transferred to the newly founded Naumburg office of Naumburg , with which they belonged to the Electorate of Saxony from 1564 and to the Albertine secondary school- principality of Saxony-Zeitz between 1656/57 and 1718 . By the resolutions of the Vienna Congress Schoenburg 1815 came to Prussia and in 1816 the county Naumburg in the administrative district of Merseburg of the Province of Saxony assigned to which he belonged until 1944th
