The Wethau , in dialect Wiethe , is a right tributary of the Saale . It rises in the Saale-Holzland district ( Thuringia ) and flows into the Burgenland district ( Saxony-Anhalt ).

Origin of name

The river name is derived from the Middle High German wêt ( woad - outdated for hunting ) and the appendix -au .

course

The headwaters of the Wethau are located in the Thuringian Saale-Holzland district west of the city of Eisenberg . It rises in Hohendorf near Bürgel and flows above Petersberg together with a tributary that rises south of Hainspitz . From there it flows northwards via Kämmeritz , Hainchen and Zschorgula , crosses the state border with Saxony-Anhalt , and flows through the places Seiselitz , Utenbach , Cauerwitz , Großgestewitz , Wettaburg , Wetterscheid, Mertendorf and Wethau . It flows south of the town of Schönburg into the Saale .

The Wethau valley

The surrounding landscape of the Wethau is referred to as the Wethautal when you leave the woodland. This also includes places that are not directly on the Wethau. The Wethau valley is bordered by the heathland in the east and the Molauer Platte in the west and merges into the Saale valley .

The Wethautal is named for the amalgamation of the surrounding communities to form the administrative communities Wethautal in Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia .
