Location of Großgestewitz in Saxony-Anhalt

Großgestewitz belongs to the municipality of Mertendorf in the Burgenland district in Saxony-Anhalt (Germany).

Geographical location

The place is south of Naumburg (Saale) on the Wethau , in dialect Wiethe, a right tributary of the Saale. The area is known as the Wethautal. The Wethautal community , in which Mertendorf and Großgestewitz are located, is named after this.

history

The beginnings of the place go back to the high Middle Ages. It was first mentioned in a document in 1040, when Emperor Heinrich III. the Bishop of Naumburg a. a. who gave 'villi gostici'.

For the parish village of Großgestewitz, a knight's seat became tangible as early as the 15th century . The resulting chancellery manor had patrimonial jurisdiction and patronage rights over the church and school. The current construction of the Großgestewitz church in Gothic style goes back to a previous building from 1424 at the latest. An originally independent Nikolai chapel (from 1510 at the latest) now forms the northern extension. The destruction caused by the Thirty Years' War could only be removed after 1700. The gallery, beamed ceiling, pulpit altar and patronage box go back to this reconstruction. The organ, inaugurated in 1889, is the last mechanical slider-drawer organ by Friedrich Ladegast from Weißenfels .

From 1500 to 1753 at the latest, representatives of the von Landwüst family appear as owners of the manor . The manor burned down in the course of the Thirty Years' War in 1645 and was rebuilt by 1660. A period of frequent changes of ownership followed: first the von Schauroth family bought the estate in 1753, then Baron von Fritsch in 1784, and finally Count Vitzthum von Eckstädt in 1792 . From 1805 to 1808 it was briefly owned by those von Dallwitz who left it to the foreign Count de Montalban . Due to indebtedness, a public auction of the property and its accessories took place in 1814. At that time, Mr. Rousset, who sold the property to the von Nostitz family in 1817, was awarded the highest bidder . The last Nostitz owner achieved the allodification of the property, which took place on May 6, 1840 by the Naumburg Higher Regional Court . After the estate came to the Sommer family between 1838 and 1840, it was owned by the von Barby family until it was expropriated by the land reform . This family also experienced the abolition of the noble patrimonial jurisdiction that had been adhering to the manor until that time in 1848/49.

The buildings of the former manor can now be used for seminars or special occasions such as weddings. There are also holiday apartments and a private library on the upper floor.

administration

After the formation of the Wettin office constitution in the 15th century, (Groß-) Gestewitz belonged to the Weißenfels office . When Leipzig was divided in 1485, the place became Albertine and in 1547 Electoral Saxon . From 1657 to 1746 he belonged to the Duchy of Saxony-Weißenfels and after the Congress of Vienna in 1815 came to the Kingdom of Prussia , where Großgestewitz was assigned to the province of Saxony ( district of Weißenfels ) from 1816 to 1952 . After the dissolution of the states and provinces in the German Democratic Republic , it was in the Halle district until 1990 and in the state of Saxony-Anhalt after the new federal states were founded in 1990. As a district of the community of Mertendorf, Großgestewitz became a member of the Wethautal community, which was founded in 2010 .
